Pubs with quirky names could attract more trade - General News - Morning Advertiser

The study of thousands of UK businesses found that pubs continued to play it safe in the name stakes with the most popular ones being the Red Lion and the Royal Oak or Crown.

But experts thought customers are more likely to remember — and return to — pubs and companies with unusual names.

“Everyone knows a Red Lion pub or Taj Mahal restaurant, but we want to find the businesses with unusual names that really stand out on the high street and bring a smile to people’s faces,” said ThomsonLocal.com spokesman Mark Cox.

“The UK’s independent businesses have had a hard time in the last two years but, as we slowly come out of recession, it’s the businesses with the most memorable, quirky names that will truly stand out.”

The funniest business names revealed by the study include a fish and chip shop called A Salt and Battered, a hairdressers named Curl Up and Dye and an opticians called Spex in the City.

The most common names were the Flower Shop for florists, Taj Mahal for Indian Restaurants and Mr Chips for chippies.
