Villagers love the pub so much they buy their own

The Hollybush public house in Seighford was expected to developed into a different kind of commercial building, but villagers did not which to lose their local tavern and instead agreed to buy it at an auction in Birmingham; However, they believe that the real work is yet to start as they now need to find a landlord as well as raise further finances for the premises restoration; “We own it. Everyone is absolutely over the moon and it is really exciting," villager Michael Carthy told the Staffordshire Newsletter.; "We have paid for the building so there would be no rent charges initially. Our aim is to get it up and running and keep it that way.” Some 19 pledges of support made the purchase possible, including one of £150,000 from a local haulage boss.via paramountmagazine.co.uk

British Beer and Pub Association Freeze on Beer Tax

British Beer and Pub Association Call for Freeze on Beer Tax

With the March Budget looming, industry and consumer groups have warmly welcomed the tabling of a motion in Parliament (Early Day Motion 2785) calling for a rethink on new huge hikes in beer tax. The EDM, tabled yesterday by the Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group Andrew Griffiths MP, who represents the brewing town of Burton, already has the support of MPs from the three main parties, including Greg Mulholland MP, Chairman of the All Party Save the Pub Group.

The move follows an influential new report last week by Oxford Economics commissioned by the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA), which revealed that 300,000 16-24 year olds depend on the sector for employment. The BBPA, CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) and SIBA (Society of Independent brewers) say that with so many young people employed in the hospitality sector, pubs could be an engine for growth and create new jobs for young people – provided the Government calls time on job-destroying beer tax rises in the Budget.

Beer Tax hikes are now set to reach an astonishing 42 per cent since the Budget of March 2008, when the discredited ‘escalator’ policy was introduced by the previous government. Set at two per cent above inflation, this year’s tax hike could be over five per cent, putting up to ten pence on a pub pint.

Brigid Simmonds, BBPA Chief Executive comments: “I hope MPs will support this motion, as there is real concern about the impact of huge tax rises on beer and pubs. Beer is Britain’s favourite pub drink - a UK product that creates jobs and keeps thousands of pubs in business. If we get a tax freeze in the Budget, we could create and protect 16,000 jobs in the next three years alone.”

Pub chain pins its hopes on a bumper jubilee June

A BURTON-BASED pub giant has revealed that it is pinning hopes of reviving its fortunes on a summer of sporting events and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Punch TavernsPunch Taverns, based in Centrum 100, released second quarter financial results which showed that the firm was on target to meet profit expectations despite experiencing issues with failing pubs that could hinder long-term growth.

On average, the net income across its 4,790 pubs increased by 0.8 per cent but like-for-like figures at its core states of 2,946 pubs dropped by 2.9 percent in this quarter and 2.1 per cent in total for the financial year so far.

The decrease in trade and profit was put down to ‘soft’ trading at Christmas which continued into January and February.

Chief executive Roger Whiteside said: “Punch has a clear operational plan to return the core estate to growth in the medium-term and extract maximum value from our non-core assets.

“Profitability in the first 28 weeks of the financial year has been broadly in line with management expectations.

“While we remain cautious on the nearterm consumer environment, we have strong plans in place and expect to benefit from the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, England football team competing in Euro 2012 and the Olympic Games in the second half of the year.

CAMRA Community Pub Month

CAMRA Community Pub Month

Community Pubs Month’ is to champion the importance of local pubs in wake of new figures showing 16 pubs close across Britain each week

In April, CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale is to launch a new national pubs campaign, Community Pubs Month, to champion local pubs which are at the heart of countless communities across Britain.

The aims of Community Pubs Month are to increase footfall in pubs, to encourage more publicans to promote new or existing events to attract further trade, and to spread awareness of community pubs throughout the media.

The dedicated website for the Month – www.communitypubsmonth.org.uk – is geared up to give pubs free publicity through listing any events licensees have planned throughout the month of April. Pubs signing up to the Month will be given free promotional material to help promote their events, whether it be the regular weekly pub quiz or a big one-off charity bash to get the community together.

Kicking off proceedings on Monday April 2nd with Community Pubs Day – the day after CAMRA’s Members’ Weekend & AGM in Torquay – CAMRA branches across Britain will be organising a wide range of events to promote their local pubs during the Month, and will be working in the lead-up to April to ensure this first year for the campaign is a big success.

Tony Jerome, CAMRA Head of Marketing, said:

‘The real aim of this Month is to give a window of opportunity for hard working publicans to promote any events they have planned in April, and for us at CAMRA to give them all the help and support in terms of publicity and increased trade.

‘We realise it’s a tough time out there for pubs at the moment – as CAMRA’s new pub closure figures highlighted last week – and this is why CAMRA has put a large amount of campaigning funds into this initiative to help pubs market themselves during April.’

JD Wetherspoon to Serve International Beers

Running from 14th March until 1st April inclusive customers will be able to choose beers that weren't previously on offer before, reports Eating Out Magazine.

The overseas beers are Imperial Russian Stout (Burov Brewery, Russia), Murrikan Mild (Smuttynose Brewery, USA), Blonde (Zululand Brewery, South Africa), Bitter (Nogne O Brewery, Norway) and Pale Ale (John Martin's Brewery, Belgium).

The UK beers are from a wide range of brewers, including Springhead, Holts, Wooden Hand and Daleside.

The pubs will be serving a range of speciality beers (ingredients include honey, loganberries, grapefruit, treacle and chocolate) as well as beers brewed exclusively for the pub.
