UK Pubs For Sale: Freehold Pubs For Sale: There are 300,000 Additional Adult Drinkers in Britain Every Year

The total number of adult drinkers in Britain has increased by about 300,000 every year, according to new analysis published in the Wilson Drinks Report ("WDR") Annual Review of 2010. But total volumes of alcohol consumed over the same period decreased for all the major categories except cider.

The analysis used the latest UK mid-year population estimates from the Office for National Statistics ("ONS") and research carried out by YouGov for WDR, which measured the % of non-drinkers in Britain every month during 2010.

Tim Wilson, managing director of the Wilson Drinks Report, commented : "Most of us are very aware that the UK population has been steadily increasing over the last few years. What is particularly interesting is when you work out how many additional adult drinkers there are each year.

We have extracted the total number of additional British adults from the ONS data, and then applied our estimate of the proportion of adults who don't drink (ie 17%).
We calculate that the total number of British adult drinkers has increased by about 300,000 every year between 2004-05 and 2008-09."

Wilson added : "In our view, most industry pundits and lobbyists fail to take into account this increase in the total population of adult drinkers when analysing the amount of alcohol consumed in Britain. If the number of drinkers is increasing by nearly 1% every year, you might expect the total volume of alcohol consumed to also increase by the same amount, which it is clearly not.

According to HMRC data, between 2004-05 and 2008-09, beer volumes decreased by 16%, wine volumes decreased by 1% and spirits volumes decreased by 7%. Only cider volumes were up over this 5 year period (up 40%)."

UK Pubs For Sale: Freehold Pubs For Sale: Red Wine Drinkers Could Provide the Key to Saving Pubs, Bars and Restaurants

Red wine drinkers spend £17.68 each time they go out, more than any other type of drinker, according to new research published by the Wilson Drinks Report (“WDR”). The results are based on research carried out by YouGov for WDR A total of 5,432 British adult drinkers took part in online omnibus panels between September and November 2010.

Tim Wilson, managing director of the Wilson Drinks Report commented : “Whilst our analysis shows that wine drinkers tend to go out less than lager or bitter drinkers, wine drinkers do spend the most each time they go out.

The trick for pub, bar and restaurant owners is to encourage wine drinkers to go out more often and to make sure they maintain their average spend per trip.“Lager (£56) and bitter (£54) drinkers tend to spend the most going out each month. But they also goout far more than other types of drinker, which brings their average spend per trip down.

The research in WDR also analyses who mostly drinks at home or at a friend’s house. Most likely to drink at home are red wine drinkers (86%), least likely are bitter drinkers (39%).

Pubs, Clubs, Hotels & Wine Bars For Sale: Royal Wedding And Easter Weekends to Boost Sales by £1.4 Billion

Royal Wedding And Easter Weekends to Boost Sales by £1.4 Billion

April's two four-day bank holiday weekends, coupled with glorious weather throughout much of the country, will drive a £1.2 billion spending spree, the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) has said, reports the Mystery Dining Company.

The 11-day period, which celebrates Easter and the royal wedding, has brought about a rise in people drinking, eating out and shopping, as more than one in five Britons take the entire period off work.

The BBPA said an additional £600 million will be spent in bars with a further £620 million boosting the retail, travel and tourism sectors.

A recent survey conducted by The Mystery Dining Company, completed by more than 400 respondents, revealed that 20 per cent of participants indicated that a visit to the pub over the course of the coming weekend would be more likely than normal.

Indeed, many pubs and restaurants are offering special promotions to attract customers over the royal wedding period - see our recent article here.

At the Cross Keys public house in Nottinghamshire, for example, drinkers will benefit from drinks at 1981 prices – the year of Charles' and Diana's wedding.

After buying their first drink at full price, patrons will then get a royal wedding token giving them their second drink at the price it was in 1981.

Landlord Roy Wood told the Morning Advertiser: "Everyone is doing themed pies and drinks, so I thought of a way of linking it with the year of Diana's wedding."

What’s in a pub’s name? - Wales News - News - WalesOnline

WHAT’S in a name?

Pubs have all sorts of weird and wonderful names from the Cow and Snuffers to The Queen’s Vaults and many are hard to forget, but what do they mean?

The tradition of naming pubs has been around for centuries, with historical records dating the existence of public houses in the UK for more than 1,000 years.

A pub’s name is used to identify and differentiate every public house and often reflect the local history, depicting a famous landmark, a local duke, king or lord or a trade indigenous to the region. More often than not, these names can give historical clues to the area surrounding the pub or they can be used to commemorate and immortalise a local event

Early pub customers were unable to read, and pictorial signs could be easily recognised. Colour also appears in a number of pub names and are sometimes associated with an object which may have been used to identify the pub including Blue Anchor or Red Lion.

Arfur Daley, Echo beer columnist and organiser of the Great Welsh Beer and Cider Festival, said: “Pub names are an important part of the identity of the pub, often existing for hundreds of years and through rebuilds of the pubs themselves.

“Often they are the last link to an emblem from the coat of arms of the family that used to own that land. Pub names are part of history that should be protected.”

Along with more common pub names including the Black Lion, Royal Oak and Kings Arms that can be found in many towns and cities in Britain, South Wales has more than its fair share of unusual pub names.

We have looked at just 10 of some of the best to find out where they originated from.

Pubs, Clubs, Hotels & Wine Bars For Sale

The Licensing Commission won't ban full strength beers in Alice Springs' pubs during lunch hours because it would generate "considerable community resentment."

The Alice Springs Alcohol Reference Panel had been set up because of concerns about the town's 'animal bars.'

Last year the media reported some pubs were allowing patrons to drink heavily from 10am only to push them out at 2pm when bottle shops opened.

In response the panel recommended beer with an alcohol content of more than 3.5 per cent be banned between 11.30am and 2pm for patrons who weren't eating a meal.

Mangalorean.Com- Serving Mangaloreans Around The World!

Melbourne, April 6 (IANS) A hotel in Australia has opened two separate bars to keep the non-indigenous people and the Aboriginals away from each other. One is called Sportsman's Bar while the other is called Animal Bar.

The two bars have been set up at the Kimberley hotel in Western Australia. While the Sportsman's Bar is frequented by mostly non-indigenous people, the Animal Bar is where the Aboriginals go. And, there is a stark contrast between the two.

The Sportsman's Bar has a fairly pleasant decor and serves food, while the Animal Bar has been designed for binge drinking, with concrete tables and metal bars around the serving area, The Australian reports.

Different rules apply at the two bars for serving alcohol. A security guard stands outside the Sportsman's Bar to prevent unruly customers from entering. However, if someone is kicked out of the Sportsman's Bar for being too intoxicated, he or she can walk around the corner to the Animal Bar to be served.

is this a joke?
