Tourists go to the pub more in Scotland than in rest of UK - Scotsman.com News

EVERY year tourists flock to Scotland to take in the country's many attractions: the stunning landscape, historic attractions and championship golf courses to name but three.
However, according to a new survey examining the habits of visitors to the UK, when tourists come north of the Border the one thing they do more than in almost any other part of the UK is spend time drinking and eating.

BBC News - Glasgow club bouncers set to use body-mounted cameras

Security staff at 15 pubs and clubs in Glasgow are to be issued with body-worn security cameras in a bid to reduce alcohol-related violence. The equipment consists of a small camera which relays images to a jacket-mounted screen. This allows the person being filmed to see their image. Strathclyde Police said use of the cameras in other areas of the UK had seen a significant drop in violence. The pilot project will run in Glasgow until 6 January.

UK Pub Sales News: Localism bill 'will allow communities to buy pubs for sale'

Communities will be able to buy pubs for sale and other local amenities under government plans to devolve power to residents' groups.

According to the Morning Advertiser, the Localism bill, which has been published today (December 14th) in parliament, will allow communities to club together to purchase licensed properties.

Communities minister Andrew Stunell commented: "Local facilities have been closing down all over the country, leaving towns and villages without vital services.

"Small community groups that are willing to take over local assets often find that they lack the time and resources to get a plan together and compete with the might and muscle of big business and developers."

However, the bill will give "real power" to local communities and put them "at the heart of local decision making".

Communities secretary Eric Pickle hailed the bill as the "centrepiece" of David Cameron's Big Society concept, as it aims to give councils and residents more powers and freedoms over planning, housing developments and management of public services.

Licensed property news: Pub companies' reforms 'must be examined'

Progress has been made by pub companies in giving tenants a fairer deal, but new codes of practice should be carefully examined, the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers has stated.

Nick Bish, chief executive of the organisation, made the remarks at the All-Party Parliamentary Save the Pub Group at Westminster earlier this week.

Codes of practice require "a forensic examination to make sure they deliver", he said, according to the Morning Advertiser.

Meanwhile, the Publican reports that MPs heard recommendations from Steve Corbett of the Fair Pint campaign and Clive Davenport of the Federation of Small Businesses.

Greg Mulholland, who chairs the parliamentary group, commented on reforms made by the pub companies.

"This is a critical time to look at what progress has been made and whether this deals with the plan for reform laid out by the Business and Enterprise Select committee and the last and current government," he noted.

If serious changes are not made, government intervention may be required next June, the MP added.

Pubs and restaurants see sluggish November sales - 12/13/2010 - Caterer Search

Major pub and restaurant groups saw slugglish growth over November 2010, with like-for-like sales up 0.4%, the slowest growth rate since May.

New data provided by the Coffer Peach Business Tracker showed that total sales including new openings were up 1.7%. But month-on-month sales were down 5.5% compared to October.

Mark Sheehan, managing director of Coffer Corporate Leisure, said: "These numbers demonstrate tough trading as we head towards the key Christmas period."

"While the leading operators have managed another month of [like-for-like] growth, the outlook for the sector remains relatively challenging," Richard Hathaway, head of travel, leisure and tourism at KPMG added.

Meanwhile, December's trading is expected to be adversely affected by the freezing weather.

The monthly Coffer Peach Business Tracker, monitors sales performance across 17 major pub and restaurant operators, including Mitchells & Butlers, Whitbread, Pizza Hut, Punch Pub Co, Gondola and Tragus.

Christmas drinking : Directgov - Newsroom

Christmas drinking survival

Alcohol Concern has come up with these top tips for safer drinking for Christmas partygoers - whether you’re going out or hosting your own celebrations.

What is a unit of alcohol?

Women can drink two to three units of alcohol per day and men three to four units a day without damaging their health.

As a rough guide:

  • one pint of normal strength beer contains two units
  • one 25ml measure of spirits contains one unit of alcohol
  • one 175ml glass of wine (12 per cent abv) contains two units and a 250ml glass contains three units
  • one 330ml alcopop (4.5 per cent - 5.5 per cent abv) contains one-and-a-half units to two units
  • one 440ml can of strong lager (4.6 per cent - 6 per cent abv) contains three units

Home measures are often larger, so watch the size of your drinks.

Property Repossession News: Homes in need of redevelopment 'will have health and safety issues'

Those thinking of purchasing property in need of restoration must be aware of health and safety issues when it comes to refurbishing buildings, Giffard has said.

Glen Irwin, sustainability director at the company, commented that sealed properties suitable for redevelopment will often have condensation problems and damp smells.

Speaking at the Sustainability Now event, he urged restoration project managers to be very careful when it comes to carrying out redevelopment tasks.

"You have got to think about what you are setting in place - try and pre-empt that you are going to have an air-quality humidity issue and then put other interventions in to deal with that," he suggested.

When it comes to insulating lofts, roofs and walls, five millimetres is enough to offer the best saving overall in terms of cost.

"Everybody thinks automatically that they have got to have two inches of insulation, so they have lost four inches across the width of the room," Mr Irwin explained, adding that nobody has to go to these extremes to make savings.

BBC News - British village life 'dying out' after pub closures

Village life in Britain is "dying out" because rural pubs are closing at a record rate, a report from the National Housing Federation has said.

The Federation said pubs were one of the "cornerstones of traditional village life".

The report's co-authors, the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA), said 893 pubs closed last year following the recession and increased taxes.

The government said it would give rural communities powers to save local pubs.

Related stories

The federation, which represents England's housing associations, said key services were disappearing "at an alarming rate" and that affordable local housing was the key to saving traditional village life.

It also said that about 400 village shops closed in 2008, while in England, between 1997 and 2008, rural schools shut down at the rate of one a month.

And it said the closures reflected a declining demand for services in villages where local families had been priced out of the area by wealthy commuters, pensioners and second-home owners.

Another factor was that there were too few new homes, it added.

Pub snacks: bags of potential - Business support - Morning Advertiser

Tips for growing pub sales

• Stock mix of well-known snack brands that are unavailable in shops to create a point of difference.

• Let your customers see what snacks you sell with eye-catching displays. Eye level is buy level.

• Boost sales by offering a joint drinks and snacks deal.

• Display a snacks list so customers know what you sell. They are not telepathic.

• Offer free nuts or snack nibbles for customers ordering premium drinks, especially with a pre-meal drink.

• Consider stocking sweet snacks and confectionery, especially if you run a family pub, to capitalise on your youthful customer base.

London Pubs Role to Play in Olympics 2012

The Morning Advertiser is reporting that a leading licensing solicitor has urged the Government to relax opening times for London pubs during the 2012 Olympics.

Jeremy Allen of Popplesten Allen said that it would make sense for the Government to make the order as soon as possible. The culture secretary can make a Licensing Hours Order to relax opening hours for occasions considered to be "of exceptional international, national or local significance".

The Publican reports that London Pubs are being urged by Boris Johnson to do their bit to help tourists feel at home when the Olympic Games roll into town in 2012.

Mayor of London has already started recruiting ambassadors to greet the hundreds of thousands of visitors set to arrive in the UK for the Olympics and Paralympics.London hostelries are to be key a recruiting ground with Johnson looking for locals to help guide visitors to key attractions – and pubs.

To support the bid pubs are being encouraged to take part in a poster campaign calling on customers to get involved.

Chard pub landlord disappointed as housing plans rejected (From Chard & Ilminster News)

A PUB landlord in Chard was disappointed that his proposal for new housing in Chard was rejected this week.

Ken Mason, of the Furnham Inn on Victoria Avenue, had his proposal for four terrace houses in the beer garden of his pub turned down.

South Somerset District Council turned down the proposal as it was considered to be of an inappropriate design, failing to respect the setting of the adjacent listed building.

But at a time when pubs are looking for extra revenue and the town is in need of extra housing the decision made little sense to the landlord.

Ken said: “To put houses there is the way forward - the garden is always vandalised and is a liability and if things stay as they do there will just be an empty listed building here.”

Chard Town Council recommended approval of the proposal on the condition that the pedestrian cut through between Furnham Road and Victoria Avenue was kept in place.

It was also noted that the site is too close to the public house and as such future residents would experience unacceptable levels of noise and disturbance.

But Ken was keen to stress that noise and disturbance were kept to a minimum from his pub – which was not the kind of venue to host live music.

Ken added: “We only ever have live music in the lounge bar and it is solo artists – we don’t have five piece bands. The area closest to the plan is a purpose built skittle alley so noise is not an issue.”

IT’S becoming more common to hear of pubs closing their doors as landlords call time for good.

So it’s heartening to know that one landlord is taking a risk by re-opening a pub in Lindley.

Traditionally pubs were always at the heart of a community and publican Christopher Baird is vowing to make The Nightingale just that.

Situated near to HRI, he’s renaming the pub after Florence Nightingale and making it a haven for healthcare workers.

Having taken over The Globe, Christopher says he will help other local traders by using local produce in the pub’s menu.

His optimism is maybe a sign that those in the industry are hopeful that the tide is turning.

By looking at new ways of getting punters back in, it may just help and making the pub the focal point of the community is a good start.

New prospects for prospective pub landlords in London

A planned sell-off of properties by Mitchell & Butlers (M&B) is set to open up a range of new opportunities for investors looking into the possibility of renting a pub in London.

Coming as the firm continues with its plans to move away from drinks-oriented establishments and concentrate its efforts on dining-centric venues, it has confirmed that it is to put 53 pubs on the market.

As well as offering the assets to their existing tenants to buy, the Independent reported that M&B will also be looking to sell them off to a range of other investors, potentially spelling good news for anyone thinking of renting a pub in London or elsewhere in the country.

Speaking to the newspaper, a source within the hospitality industry explained that a number of prime properties, including several with no obvious branding, are set to come onto the market in the coming weeks.

"These are rather large, rather nice, rather interesting pubs," the insider noted.

This comes soon after Bloomsbury Leisure Group outlined its plans to open a unique beer house in a historic property in the grounds of Euston Station to the Publican.

Licensed Property: UK Pubs For Sale: Pubcos Struggle

Pubcos Struggle

Britain's biggest pubs group, said it would not pay a dividend in the current year and expected trading conditions to remain challenging, sending its shares down 11 percent on Tuesday.

The company stopped paying dividends in May 2009 to help reduce crippling debt of nearly £4 billion . Enterprise Inns disposed of 579 pubs during its fiscal year, raising 166 million pounds and generated proceeds of £114 million through a sale and leaseback programme. This helped it reduce net debt by £374 million to £3.3 billion.

Its estate now stands at 6,820 pubs valued at £5bn. Punch sold off 43 pubs during its year and has an estate of around 6,500. Both said that they intend to continue disposing of non-core pubs in the near-term.

Another rival, Mitchells & Butlers, announced yesterday that it has completed the sale of 330 "drinks-led" pubs to Stonegate Pub Co.

UK Property Market Flooded With Cheap Freehold Pubs for Sale:

Paramount Investments are a London based property investment brokerage, offering properties for sale suitable for redevelopment, conversion, modernisation and refurbishment. ''We can advise in all areas of property investment and development such as residential, leisure, office, retail, industrial, healthcare and student housing.'' said Mark Greig,, Managing Director at Paramount Investments.

There have been more appealing times to be a landlord as the financial crisis is forcing drinkers to think long and hard before they reach in their pockets. The financial situation is being blamed for the recent crisis in the pub trade, which has seen pubs closing and changing hands on a monthly basis. The pub trade is also suffering because of the smoking ban and competition from cheap supermarket drinks. The price of freehold pubs continues to fall, as breweries, pub chains and pub companies offload unprofitable, struggling, run down or vacant pubs.

Mark Grieg said: "A number of pubs have closed and falling property prices are creating tremendous bargains within the pub market for licensees who know they can respond to the challenges facing the modern trade. Footfall in all pubs has gone down two-thirds in the last twenty years, and there just isn't the demand that there used to be. Beer sales are falling by 20pc year on year and pubs are closing at the rate of 5 a day."

With pub property prices at rock bottom, and the square footage of public houses and the surrounding land, such investments are proving to be the best value property investment around.

''In the current climate pub companies are not investing in the re-opening of pubs so that local pubs all over the UK are being sold on to investors. Recent price cuts caused are tempting entrepreneurs to look at the potential locked up in sites previocusly thought too expensive to run as a business. As property investments or development opportunities, these neglected, disused or delicensed freehold properties are currently for sale at below market value and present excellent redevelopment, modernisation and refurbishment opportunities, subject to gaining consent for change of use or planning permission'' he added.

''Pubs in the UK have a flexible A4 planning 'use class' that normally can be changed to residential or A1 use, say, for a newsagents, A2, a delicatessen or a firm of solicitors or architects or A3 for use as a restaurants. We help corporate and private investors research the local area to learn about any planning restrictions orf new developments that may have an effect on the rental market or the capital growth of the commercial property investment'' said Mark.

''The due dilligence process can be one of the most critical elements in commercial property investment, especially if you lack the knowledge required to make an informed investment decision,'' he continued. ''The Paramount property sales database can save time on property viewings, local research, due dilligence and conveyancing. Commercial property sales details include full sales documentation, schedule of accommodation, title plan, lease, tenancy agreements, contracts of sale, schedules of tenancy, projections, appraisals, floor plans, local authority searches, soil surveys, structural reports, title deeds, planning documentation, as well as professional aerial photographs and detailed maps.showing the exact location of the hotel or pub for sale. ''

The London based commercial property agents Paramount Investments have a wide range of freehold pubs for sale in the UK, from £59,000 +VAT for the Black Horse Tavern in Durham to McGoverns in Kilburn for £2.5 million
