The hotel industry has continued to grow in 2011 despite us being in the midst of a gloomy economic climate.

Mark Blick, managing director of brokerage consultancy Soric International, said that the UK remains a strong place for hotels to operate in and many individuals and firms are still reaping the rewards of moving into the hospitality sector.

"The recession has not prevented the UK hotel industry from expanding as 106 hotels were opened in 2011, containing 11,800 rooms and an additional 170 hotels [with] 21,500 rooms are expected to open in 2012,” he stated.

Mr Blick added that investment from overseas has played a major factor in keeping the industry buoyant and for those in London, next summer’s Olympic Games is set to the hotel business into overdrive.

Indeed, hotels, bars and restaurants in London have been tipped to play a leading role in driving the UK economy out of recession by Oxford Economics and the British Hospitality Association (BHA).

UK Pub Sales News: 2011 was actually a good year for pubs

Unexpectedly, 2011 has been a good year for the licensed trade says Pete Brown of the Publican’s Morning Advertiser.

And Mr Brown says he is feeling very positive about what 2012 will have in store for those with or looking to buy a pub.

He feels that many of the claims about pubs failing are misleading as bad news is always reported more widely than good news and that CGA Strategy’s prediction that new pub openings will soon exceed closures as a good indication of the way which the trade is heading.

However, he points out that many of new openings will be a “different breed of pub from those which are closing: they’re more premium, more expensive, a bit flashier”.

His comments follow on from advice given by the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group recently, which said that adding a food menu to your pub's offerings is one of the best ways to boost trade.

I’d rather have a pint! - Your Letters - Mirfield Reporter

According to the British Retail Consortium more than one in 10 shops in the UK town centres are closed.

Much of it is due to internet sales and the increasing number of supermarkets that small shops can’t compete with. There has also been an erosion of family spending power due to the soaring cost of food and transport.

I now read in the Reporter (December 2) that Tesco wants to convert The Whistler pub in Dewsbury in to a Tesco Express store. This comes on top of Tesco taking over the Black Bull pub in Mirfield.

It seems that no corner of England is safe from these capitalist predators destroying our high streets.

We are supposed to live in a democracy and yet our elected representatives are powerless to stop them.

The importance of saving our pubs cannot be underestimated. They provide much needed choice on the high street for hungry and thirsty shoppers, not to mention a toilet and a well earned break for town centre workers.

Pubs are vital for tourism and hospitality. They have adapted to meet customers’ needs – such as the huge growth in pub food and state- of-the-art coffee machines.

Given a choice between Tesco and a decent pint, the pub wins hands down.

Can the Olympics Save London's Ailing Pub Trade? - TIME

Across the East London skyline, armies of cranes are busy assembling industrial jigsaw pieces into seductively curved Olympic stadia. But a mere javelin's throw away from this shiny modern metropolis sits the Queen's Head, an aging East End pub, which, judging by the interior, hasn't changed much since London last hosted the Olympics in 1948. Once a popular haunt for locals, the Queen's Head has been hemorrhaging drinkers and profits in recent years, so landlord Bill Sinefield, who has 20 years' experience in the trade, was brought in by the owners in a last-ditch attempt to save the place from closure. Despite introducing drink deals and live-music nights, Sinefield is still struggling to bring in customers. He reluctantly admits that next summer, when the Olympics go to London, could be make or break for the Queen's Head. "You can't just build your business around the Games, but we are certainly in need of the boost," says Sinefield. "Times are pretty tough at the moment."

The story of the Queen's Head will resonate with pub owners across the U.K. What was once a cornerstone of British society has been slowly crumbling since the 1980s, and the recession has many predicting the death of the British pub. In the first half of 2011, around 14 pubs were closing each week (in 2009, in the immediate wake of the financial crisis, the pub trade was seeing 52 casualties a week). The 2007 smoking ban, the availability of cheap supermarket booze and a beer tax that has risen by 35% since 2008 have led many publicans to lay the blame solely at the feet of the government. Then in November, the government announced that it would not take any action over the beer tie, a controversial contract that forces landlords to buy expensive beer from the company that owns their premises, a decision described by one union as a "disaster for the pub industry." With a backdrop this bleak it's little wonder London's 9,000 landlords are hoping for an Olympic payday. (See more on British pubs.)

But if they want to gain from the Games, they'll need to find a way to pull tourists away from the big event. When deciding how to quench the thirst of the 11.8 million people expected to descend upon London for the Olympics, organizers overlooked Britain's 900 breweries and awarded exclusive beer rights to Heineken, meaning the Dutch brewer will be the sole supplier of beer and cider in all Olympic venues. Officials defended the decision by pointing out that Heineken's U.K. operating company is based in Edinburgh, but the country's pub community feels betrayed by the loss of the chance to promote British pub culture to hordes of tourists. "To put it mildly, we're pissed off," says Iain Loe, spokesman for the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA). "Britain is famous for its great variety of real ales, but shamefully they will be absent from all Olympic venues."

While this snub has many barmen declaring the proverbial glass half-empty, others think that the absence of local beers at the Games could encourage tourists to venture out of the Olympic sphere to sup their pints in the convivial atmosphere of the great British pub. According to VisitBritain, 13 million tourists enjoyed the offerings of a British pub last year, making it one of the most popular tourist activities. And the lure of the Olympics could help bring this pastime to a whole new audience, claims Brigid Simmonds, chief executive of the British Beer & Pub Association. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to showcase the best of British beer and pubs," she says. "Landlords are hoping for a windfall, not only in beer sales but also accommodation, as many London pubs have rooms to let." (See pictures of Oktoberfest turning 200.)

That's only, though, if tourists actually turn up to the Games. In November, the European Tour Operators Association announced that operators are seeing a 95% shortfall in the usual number of London bookings for July and August 2012, which is when the Olympics are being held. It's still early, and many tourists may simply be holding out for cheaper deals, but in an attempt to allay any potential visitors' fears of Olympic price gouging, London Mayor Boris Johnson has introduced a fair-pricing charter that so far has the backing of 60 businesses — including pubs — who promise to offer reasonable pricing for tourists during the Games.

But even if London's pubs manage to draw Olympics tourists through their doors, the major hurdle will be keeping them there. "The reason many pubs are ailing is because they're badly run and in poor condition," says CAMRA's Loe. "It's important for pubs to be clean, tidy and have welcoming staff — this is a chance to showcase the best aspects of our trade and build up new clientele." It seems the real winners of the Olympics will be the friendly, presentable pubs that pull the patrons in this summer and make a lasting impression, thus enticing the tourists, and their friends, to go back on their next visit. (See 10 things to do in London.)

As Queen's Head landlord Sinefield points out: "The Games is a great opportunity for us, but we need to use it as the catalyst for long-term success." For London's landlords, it seems this particular event will be a marathon rather than a sprint.

Pub M&As predicted to soar in 2012

According to new research from business advisory firm BDO, the number of merger and acquisition transactions relating to pubs, bars and restaurants looks set to rise significantly next year.

Head of restaurant and bars at BDO, David Campbell, told The Financial Times, “Eating out has been relatively unaffected in the consumer downturn and we see casual dining continuing to grow.

“With banks looking to offload pub assets and a number of profitable restaurant chains approaching the point where we would expect an ownership change, the market is ripe for M&A activity,” added Mr Campbell.

The firm also predicted that popular high-street chains such as Pizza Express and Jamie’s Italian could be acquired by new owners in 2012 as private equity companies look to cash in on the lucrative dining sector.

Mr Campbell added, “Companies will be investing in 2012 in anticipation of consumer pressure easing in 2013 as wage inflation supersedes cost inflation.”

The firm reported that as many as 5,000 pubs currently up for sale will see some sort of movement next year, with giants such as Greene King and Punch Taverns offloading less successful pubs and banks disposing of repossessed assets.

BBC News - Future of Derry bars 'at risk' from illegal trading

A group representing the pub business has warned the future of bars in Londonderry is at risk from illegal trading.

Pubs of Ulster Chief Executive, Colin Neill, said about 50 pubs in County Derry, and 10-20 in the centre of Derry, regularly abuse licencing laws.

He said the number of pubs and nightclubs trading without the right licence could lead to job losses.

"They are effectively stealing income from the law-abiding publican.

"Five hundred pounds in cash taken from a till would invariably be considered theft; this is as bad if not worse.

"These unlawful operations are stealing thousands of pounds from businesses and impacting not only on the income of the owner, but on the thousands of staff employed across the city," he said.

Mr Neill is to meet local publicans and the PSNI in Derry on Tuesday to discuss the problem of illegal trading.

Free Coca-Cola for designated drivers - Latest car stories - MSN Cars UK

Designated drivers will be rewarded with free Coca-Cola drinks over the Christmas period as part of the annual THINK! drink drive safety campaign.

More than 8,000 pubs and student union bars are to offer the ‘buy one, get one free’ incentive on Coke soft drinks, between 9 December 2011 and 1 January 2012.

Coca-Cola has launched an online pub finder so people can search for pubs offering the free drink inventive.

The move is part of a £660,000 Christmas drink drive campaign that is already running, and which will be promoted on TV over the weekend. The high-profile incentive aims to drive home the message to young men in particular, who are consistently over-represented in drink drive casualty figures.

Men aged 17-29 are thus being targeted by a campaign that will include radio advertising, posters in pub toilets, online search activity and targeted Facebook advertising.

In launching the annual campaign, Road Safety Minister Mike Penning said the aim was to continue ongoing big reductions in drink drive deaths.

“The number of drink drive deaths has fallen by more than 75% since 1979, but drink driving is still devastating lives with around 250 people killed in collisions where a driver was over the limit last year.

“Our THINK! campaign makes it clear that drivers who get behind the wheel over the limit risk losing their licence as well as facing a fine and even a prison sentence.”

The deal with Coca-Cola, he said, was to reward to designated drivers as part of the government’s Drive Friendly initiative. This was launched two years ago and aims to support designated drivers with special promotions on on-alcoholic drinks.

“No one wants to spend their Christmas in a police cell,” he added. “My message is clear: don’t drink and drive.”

BBPA calls for rethink on Diamond Jubilee pub opening hours | 6 December 2011 | Stock Market Wire

The Government must ensure that the people of Britain are able to give Her Majesty the Queen the massive national ‘thank you’ she so richly deserves on the Diamond Jubilee next June – by letting pubs open for extended hours on Sunday and Monday on the special, double bank holiday.

The government consultation, just closed, on the issue suggests that extra hours will be allowed for Friday and Saturday – but with the huge celebrations likely to continue on the Monday, given the extra bank holiday on Tuesday, the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) wants the extra hours moved to Sunday and Monday instead. This would make pubs the heart of the national holiday celebrations, just as they were for this year’s Royal Wedding.

Extra hours on Friday and Saturday would be too much ‘business-as-usual’, says the BBPA, and not covering Sunday would cause particular problems, given that many pubs still close early on Sunday under their existing licences.

Brigid Simmonds, BBPA Chief Executive, comments:

“It’s hard to imagine a more special event in the life of Britain than the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee – and pubs should be at the heart of the celebrations, without the red tape around late opening hours.

“The Government is right to recognise the need for extra opening hours, and extra hours worked brilliantly for the Royal Wedding with no problems - pubs really do need the same for the Jubilee Sunday and Monday evenings."

The Hindu : Cities / Hyderabad : Sales at pubs, restaurants take a hit with anti drunk driving Laws!!

Many prefer to party either at home or friends' places now

Ever since the anti-drunk driving was launched by the traffic police, it's not just the guzzlers who are a worried lot but the pub and restaurant owners too as most of them are staring at poor sales reports in the last few days.

Initiative welcomed

Publicly, however, they are welcoming the initiative. Restaurant owners also claim that their business has not been affected, compared to pubs and lounges as it is mostly the families who frequent them. They also notice a significant change.

“People are making sure they do not drive vehicles after consuming liquor or they are arranging cabs, which is a good trend,” says Andhra Pradesh Hotels and Restaurants Association secretary Pradeep Kumar Dutt.

There are about 130 hotels and restaurants, which are classified into three, four and five classes and over two dozen pubs and lounges in the city.

Some of the best earning ones are located in prime areas where the police action is the strongest. Each pub does a business of about Rs.1 lakh per day, which doubles on weekends. With the police generally targeting youngsters frequenting pubs, their business has gone for a toss, acknowledges a pub owner, wishing anonymity.

“How many can afford drivers or cabs every time they visit a pub or lounge. Many prefer to party either at home or at friends' places,” he rues. An unintended off-shoot of the drive against drunk driving is that the retail booze dealers are sporting big smiles as they have been noticing a spurt in their sales with partygoers being homebound.

Heineken buys entire RBS Galaxy pub estate for £412m

Heineken buys entire RBS Galaxy pub estate for £412m

Post a commentBy Luke Nicholls, 02-Dec-2011

Royal bank of Scotland (RBS) has sold its entire Galaxy estate, a portfolio consisting of 918 pubs, to Heineken in a deal worth £412m.

Heineken will add the 818 pubs to its existing 462-strong estate

Heineken will add the 818 pubs to its existing 462-strong estate

The deal is the biggest of its kind in almost a decade and will add to Heineken’s existing state of 462 pubs. RBS, which initially acquired the pubs in 1999, said the sale was in line with its strategy to reduce non-core assets.

Heineken subsidiary Scottish & Newcastle (S&N) has always managed the tenanted pub group for RBS. It will receive £10m from Heineken to wind-up this existing contract.

Stefan Orlowsku, managing director of Heineken UK, said: “There continues to be an important role for the great British pub in the UK on-trade, and this acquisition is a significant vote of confidence in the channel.

"Owning the Galaxy freehold will allow us to continue the successful transformation of our pub business, concentrate on operational excellence and deliver long-term value from a high-quality, well invested pub estate."

Return of investor confidence

Peter Hansen of RBS deal adviser Sapient Corporate Finance, added: “This is the largest tenanted transaction since December 2003 when Punch Taverns acquired Pubmaster for £1.2 billion and shows the return of investor confidence in the future of the tenanted trade, particularly larger, high quality, tenanted pubs. Falkirk pub serving 2,000 meals a week after joint investment - Eat Out Magazine

A Punch Taverns licensee couple in Falkirk are serving as many as 2,000 meals a week after a £350,000 joint investment between the company and themselves.

Gary and Wendy Horne have been running the Coppertop in the town since 2009. The couple has invested around £120,000 in the pub with Punch Taverns making an investment of £230,000. The joint investment has transformed the business into a busy food-led business – it has a 75/25 trading split. The Coppertop is so busy at weekends that it has to turn away as many as 300 to 500 customers.

The food offer is focused on good-value traditional British food such as steak pies and fish and chips, with the average dinner spend of £8 per head.

Among the eye-catching features introduced during the refurbishment, there is a £10,000 five-food long LED screen that looks like a real fire.

Gary Horne, who previously ran a Punch pub a decade ago, said: "Punch is a totally different company to the one I knew a decade ago. It's been brilliant to me in the last couple of years – very supportive. It's given me the opportunity to make decent money here. If I can find another Punch pub that's the right pub in the right location, I'd be delighted to take on another one."

The Coppertop faces fierce local competition in Falkirk, including a nearby Beefeater and a new build restaurant. But Horne says that being customer-focused and offering value is the key. "I think Punch has recognized the potential in a lot of their pubs if they can get the right people to do the job – and I think you have to do food if you want to stick around."

Marston’s launches drive to open more pubs - Business News - Yorkshire Post

PUB chain Marston’s is to open another 25 pubs next year as cash-strapped customers trade down from restaurant dining to a meal at their local pub.

The new outlets, which will include three in Yorkshire with one site confirmed in Cleckheaton, will create 1,000 jobs over the next year including around 100 in the Yorkshire area.

The company, which has around 200 pubs currently in Yorkshire, operates under the Pitcher & Piano and Tavern Table brands.

The trend away from restaurant to pub dining helped Marston’s full-year profit come in at the upper end of expectations.

Chief executive Ralph Findlay said customers are looking for “affordable treats”.

“The focus we’ve had on value has been one which we think is utterly crucial in this market,” he said.

“If you break out what consumers are spending on eating out, pubs are doing better than restaurants.”

Marston’s has introduced a number of offers such as two main meals for £10 and a curry with a drink for £4.95 as it looks to pull in diners.

The group reported strong food sales in Yorkshire and cited the Yorkshire Rose in Huddersfield as one of its best performing pubs in the region.

Ex-Beautiful South singer Paul Heaton becomes a pub landlord | News | NME.COM

Paul Heaton has moved into the licensing trade after buying a pub in Salford.

The former Beautiful South singer explained he decided to snap up the Kings' Arms boozer in the north-west city after growing concerned about the "fractured" local community.

Heaton told Manchesterconfidential.co.uk that convenience was also a factor in his business decision, as he already uses the upstairs room in the pub to rehearse.

He said:

It’s a bit of a fractured community around the pub, with city centre flats on one side and Salford houses on the other, so we want to try and bring those people together a bit more.

Heaton has had to sit an exam on the licensing trade as part of the move - and isn't sure if he's passed it yet.

He added that he hasn't "come into it with a business plan", but already has designs on the types of crisps he wants to sell behind the bar and the tunes that'll be played on the jukebox.

Heaton is also set to kick off his second UK tour of pubs at the venue next year.

BBC News - Greene King pub chain sees first half profits rise

Pub owner and brewer Greene King has joined its rivals in reporting higher half-yearly profits, but warns that it sees a tough year ahead.

Suffolk-based Greene King said pretax profits were up 5.6% at £77.2m, following good results from Marston's and Fuller Smith and Turner.

But Rooney Anand, Greene King's chief executive, gave a bleak assessment of the economic climate.

He said incomes were squeezed and this would not change in the near future.

Mr Anand said in this environment people were looking for "everyday indulgence", echoing Marston's chief who referred to "affordable treats".

He added: "Falling consumer confidence and the weakening of the UK economic recovery suggest that we will face another tough trading environment in 2012.

"Despite this, there are still significant opportunities for growth, and we believe our strategy to grow our retail estate and our share of the eating out market will help us to maintain our track record of strong earnings and dividends."

Greene King operates 2,400 pubs across the country as well as restaurants including the Loch Fyne seafood chain.

Its chains include Hungry Horse, Old English Inns and Bellhaven.

Pub Crawls: Ale Trails through UK and Ireland - TNT Magazine

Pub Crawls: Ale Trails through UK and Ireland

Pub Crawls: Ale Trails through UK and Ireland

The pub is one of Britain’s finest innovations, so it would be rude not to check more of them out ... Words by SOPHIE ELLIS.

There’s something about a pub crawl that makes you feel almost virtuous. After all, you’re really working for your ale. In fact, with all that exercise and orienteering, you could almost be running a marathon. Here are our favourite pub crawls in the UK and Ireland: they’re not for the fainted-hearted – or weak-of-stomach – and if you end up crawling home, don’t say we didn’t warn you.

The Seven-Legged, Nottingham

This annual Nottingham-based extravaganza has a dedicated following, and a large one at that. Made up of seven bars – and purported to be the largest student bar crawl in the world, as more than 6000 students took part last year – the aim is to remain standing. Teams of six, all in matching fancy dress, are tied together, while a seventh member is charged with dashing to the bar. Venues include Oceana and Gatecrasher, with the route changing each year.

Newquay Mile, Newquay

A surfer favourite that’s best undertaken in summer, booze-swillers stumble between 12 Cornwall pubs and bars, starting at The Fort Inn in Fore Street and finishing at Berties Bar in East Street. Fun facts along the way: the Towan Blystra takes its name from Newquay’s first written reference in the 14th century, and Skinner’s has a great selection of ales from its own brewery.

The Mumbles Mile, Wales

This nine pit-stop pub crawl in Mumbles near Swansea is a Welsh institution. Once a haunt of poet Dylan Thomas, the seaside stretch of road is perfect for lazy weekend crawlers. Start at The White Rose in Newton Road, and end in The Pilot in Mumbles Road. Must be enjoyed with a plate of Welsh Rarebit.

Temple Bar, Dublin

There’s no shortage of good ‘craic’ in Dublin, or ‘Publin’ as it’s often termed. For a boozy bonanza of epic proportions, just follow the locals as they sway in and out of pubs around the Temple Bar area of the city. Notable spots are the Palace Bar – unspoilt by the passage of time – and The Foggy Dew for the live music, but make sure you end up in Dublin’s oldest pub, The Brazen Head. The coach house was first made a public boozing spot in 1198.

Rose Street Challenge, Edinburgh

If you like a little history with your beer, Edinburgh is your perfect destination. Tucked behind the famous Princes Street, Rose Street’s 20 or so pubs are conveniently within staggering distance of one another. The Abbotsford boasts beautiful Edwardian décor, and the Auld Hundred is one of the oldest bars in the city, dating back to 1800. This year-round challenge is a favourite with sports fans, who endeavour to have a drink in every pub on the street.

TransPennine Pub Crawl, Yorkshire and Lancashire

Making good use of Britain’s railways, this pub crawl demands you hop off the train at each of the eight stops along the route from Manchester Victoria to Batley (with a change in Huddersfield mid-way), and enjoy a different pint in the pubs and small breweries near – or in – the stations. Crawlers start in Stalybridge’s Buffet Bar and end in Batley’s Cellar Bar. Try it on a Saturday if you’re looking for some companionship!

Oban Pub Crawl, Scotland

Although it’s dubbed the ‘Seafood Capital of Scotland’, the locals know it’s Oban’s distilled whisky that sets them apart. But even if a wee dram isn’t your tipple, this crawl can’t fail to impress. Overlooked by the mountains of Morvern and Ardgour, drinkers attempt to fit in as many pubs as possible. There’s no set route, but seven is the minimum for free swag – if you collect a ‘passport’ in the first bar that you visit and get it stamped in every pub, you get a free T-shirt at your last stop.

UK'S QUIRKIEST PUBS

With a bar that measures just 15ft by 7ft, The Nutshell in Bury St Edmunds holds the Guinness World Record title for the smallest pub in Britain. Squeeze in and check out the eccentric décor, which includes a mummified cat and an aeroplane propeller. (thenutshellpub.co.uk)

The Mermaid Inn in Rye, East Sussex, serves up spirits in more ways than one. Claiming to be ‘Britain’s Most Haunted Pub’, it’s allegedly home to two separate pairs of duelists, a couple who sit on the end of guests’ beds, countless spirit smugglers and a dead servant girl or two. (mermaidinn.com)

Although it dates back to 1242, in the Fifties The Bear in Oxford introduced a tradition of cutting off gentlemen’s ties as they walked through the door. The walls display more than 4500 snippets – in return, the owners of the ties were given half a pint. (6 Alfred Street, Oxford, OX1 4EH)

No need to barge to the bar: unless you’re in one that is. Canal House Bar in Nottingham  is built over the canal itself – you have to walk via a footbridge over the water to get to the bar. Great for summer drinking and watching the boats go by; it’s common to see canal-boat owners pull up inside for a pint. (canalhousebar.co.uk)

UK Pubs For Sale - Freehold Pubs For Sale: Punch Taverns Rent Hike Forces Pub Closure

Punch Taverns Rent Hike Forces Pub Closure

A pub landlord says he may be forced to leave his business because the pub owners have hiked his rent up by 60 per cent, according to Bakewell Today.

Dave Mountford, who has run the Rising Sun in Middleton-by-Wirksworth for four years, said the increase by Punch Taverns, the biggest pub company in the UK, would leave him with less than £10,000 per year to look after his family.

Punch has asked for a rent increase from £15,000 to £25,000 in June next year.

Over the past three years, Mr Mountford said he had tripled drinks sales at the pub.

He added: “They now make £85,000 per annum from the pub while we make £20,000.“I was stunned when Punch announced an increase of 60 per cent.

“If the rent increases we will be left with around £10,000 a year to live on.

“I sat down and looked carefully at the figures they have provided and came to the conclusion they are inaccurate.

“We would not be able to stay if the rent went up. It would not be viable.”

Mr Mountford believes Punch has over-valued what he earns and had not included waste costs.

He contacted a list of 18 comparable pubs in the area provided by Punch.

“I phoned up these pubs and they nearly all said they are going out of business. A couple had just received eviction notices. The data showed they are paying much too much rent.”

Trade union GMB now plan to undertake a major survey of pub rents, incomes and costs.

A spokesperson from Punch Taverns said: “We have a Code of Practice that clearly outlines our ways of working and commitments to our licensees and explains what to expect when leasing a pub with Punch.

“The terms we have presented to Mr Mountford are in accordance with our Code of Practice and follow the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors’ guidelines. If we are unable to reach agreement with Mr Mountford, we will follow the provisions set out in our Code of Practice for dispute resolution.”
