Lib Dem MP and Save the Pub Group chair Greg Mulholland had been the candidate favoured by Fair Pint and the Campaign for Real Ale to take the reins from John Healey. Tory MP Nigel Evans was the other name in the frame.
Healey was only appointed in February meaning Britain had a pubs minister for just over three months.
But in that time he did set out a 12-point plan to help pubs, including action to force pubcos to offer tenants a free of tie lease, forcing Brulines equipment to be officially calibrated and offering £3.3m worth of funding for community run pubs (Pubcos face new Beer Orders).
Mulholland tweeted: “Seems clear there will be no Minister for Pubs. Not that John Healey ever really was that, but we do need to know who in DCLG will do the role.”
The Lib Dems had been keen to keep the post.
The Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) has so far not commented on the position.
