Queens Diamond Jubilee Pub Opening Times

Pubs will be allowed to stay open until 1am on Friday June 1 and Saturday June 2 to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. Landlords will not have to apply for permission from local licensing authorities.

The celebrations will centre around an extended weekend in 2012 on 2, 3, 4 and 5 June, as the nation marks the Queen's 60 years on the throne.

The government consulted councils, police and licensees before approving the blanket relaxation of trading hours for the Diamond Jubilee.

It also asked for feedback on a proposal to change pub opening times on the days of the opening and closing ceremonies for the London Olympics, but eventually rejected the idea.

The late May bank holiday has been moved to Monday 4 June 2012 and an additional Jubilee bank holiday will take place on Tuesday 5 June 2012.The extra bank holiday and extended bank holiday weekend also applies to Scotland.

BBPA calls for rethink on Diamond Jubilee pub opening hours | 6 December 2011 | Stock Market Wire

The Government must ensure that the people of Britain are able to give Her Majesty the Queen the massive national ‘thank you’ she so richly deserves on the Diamond Jubilee next June – by letting pubs open for extended hours on Sunday and Monday on the special, double bank holiday.

The government consultation, just closed, on the issue suggests that extra hours will be allowed for Friday and Saturday – but with the huge celebrations likely to continue on the Monday, given the extra bank holiday on Tuesday, the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) wants the extra hours moved to Sunday and Monday instead. This would make pubs the heart of the national holiday celebrations, just as they were for this year’s Royal Wedding.

Extra hours on Friday and Saturday would be too much ‘business-as-usual’, says the BBPA, and not covering Sunday would cause particular problems, given that many pubs still close early on Sunday under their existing licences.

Brigid Simmonds, BBPA Chief Executive, comments:

“It’s hard to imagine a more special event in the life of Britain than the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee – and pubs should be at the heart of the celebrations, without the red tape around late opening hours.

“The Government is right to recognise the need for extra opening hours, and extra hours worked brilliantly for the Royal Wedding with no problems - pubs really do need the same for the Jubilee Sunday and Monday evenings."

Government plans to extend opening hours for Queen's Diamond Jubilee - 10/12/2011 - Caterer Search

The Government could extend opening hours for pubs and bars during the Queen's Diamond Jubilee weekend, Home Secretary Theresa May has said.

Under the plans, pubs, bars, community and village halls and other licensed venues in England and Wales will be able to open until 1am on Friday 1 June and Saturday 2 June next year.

British Beer & Pub Association chief executive Brigid Simmonds welcomed the move: "This is good news, as we have been calling for extra hours, which will keep Britain's pubs right at the heart of this huge national celebration, just as they were for the Royal Wedding.

"We will be hoping to persuade the Government to extend this further, and certainly to the Olympic and Paralympic opening and closing ceremonies."
