UK pub goers drink 88m fewer pints as beer sales drop - Telegraph
"As has occurred after every World Cup, the beer market hit a bump in the road, which was not helped by a wet summer," said Brigid Simmonds, chief executive of the BBPA. "But these exceptional factors are underlaid by lingering economic and consumer uncertainty."
The BBPA said consumers are increasingly worried about their disposable income, with spending cuts and tax rises on the way.
The industry body said beer and pubs "need a break" and called on the Government to "lighten the regulatory and tax load which currently burdens the sector and is a brake on growth."
The pub and brewing industries have been hit by the persistent fall in beer sales as more people drink at home, the smoking ban and pub closures, which reached 2,300 last year.
The last Government increased alcohol duties by 2pc above inflation, a measure which has not been reversed, and the industry expects to suffer when VAT goes up from 17.5pc to 20pc in January.
The BBPA says beer pays an unfairly high level of tax, at around 42p per unit of alcohol compared with 33p for cider and 37p for vodka. Beer sales generate about £7bn in tax revenues.
However Diageo, the world's biggest spirits maker, has suggested freezing duty on spirits and bringing beer, cider and wine into line by raising the duty they pay, so that one unit of alcohol is taxed the same.
The Government recently finished the consultation period on two reviews of the alcohol industry, one on licensing laws and one on taxation.

Bars to create pub jobs for British Pub Week? :: Caterer News
Running from October 30th to November 6th, the week aims to celebrate the role that pubs play in the local communities and society as a whole.
"Pubs are so much more than places that sell alcohol, they are unique and they are for all - from the old-timer who visits his pub to see his pals, to the families, couples and friends who meet up for special occasions," founder of British Pub Week, Inez Ward, told Punch Taverns.
She went on to say that uniting all members of the pub industry in preparing for the week had been a "fantastic experience".
Earlier this month, auctioneer Mark Jenkinson & Son told the Star that more pubs will start to be put up for sale in South Yorkshire over the coming months.

BBC News - David Nuttall MP calls for end to pub smoking ban
David Nuttall MP calls for end to pub smoking ban
Landlords should be allowed to decide for themselves whether to allow smoking in their pubs, a Greater Manchester MP has said.
David Nuttall, the new Conservative MP for Bury North, wants to overturn the smoking ban by introducing a Commons Early Day Motion next week.
Mr Nuttall said the legislation was partly responsible for the closure of dozens of pubs in his constituency.
"It's not just smokers, everybody loses out," he said.

End Quote Susan Joyce Landlady, The Swan, BuryIt's dreadful when it is windy and raining for people to smoke outside”
Mr Nuttall's bill would exempt pubs and social clubs from the ban, allowing landlords and licensees to have dedicated smoking lounges for drinkers complete with smoke filters.
"I'm a devout non-smoker and wouldn't want to go back to the days when people were eating a meal and had smoke blown into their faces," said Mr Nuttall.
He added: "We do want to add an element of freedom of choice."
Susan Joyce, landlady of The Swan in Bury, backed Mr Nuttall's idea for smoking rooms in pubs.
"It's dreadful when it is windy and raining for people to smoke outside," she said.
DEPTFORD: Pubs being wiped out by bookies and flats (From News Shopper)
A TOWN is losing all its pubs and local authorities are powerless to stop the rot, it has been claimed.
According to statistics from the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra), Deptford has lost 70 per cent of its pubs in the last decade.
The latest to go is the John Evelyn on Evelyn Street which has been sold off by owner Admiral Taverns to the firm behind Paddy Power bookmakers.
Its closure leaves 10 pubs left in the area - one for every bookmaker if Paddy Power is given the go ahead.
It is a sad end for the Deptford pub, renowned as the place where playwright Christopher Marlowe met his death in 1593 following an argument over a drinks bill. http://www.paramountinvestments.co.uk/Property-for-sale-Poplar-London-E14-3

Plans to convert a Bath pub into flats have provoked concern from two businessmen who wanted to keep it open.
Row over housing plans for pub
Oldfield Park developer Richard Chapman has applied for permission to turn the Horseshoe at North Road into five flats, after completing the purchase of the building in August.
But there are claims that previous owner Admiral Taverns turned its back on solid interest from Bath firm Four County Inns, which also runs the Royal Oak in Lower Bristol Road.
The move comes as planning permission has been granted to turn the Brains Surgery pub at Larkhall into flats and as several other pubs in the city are up for sale.
BBC News - What does the price of a pint say about a pub?
The price of beer varies considerably across the UK, a survey indicates. What does the cost of a pint tell us about where we drink?
It is the familiar cry of the northerner cast adrift in unfamiliar London licensed premises: "How much did you just say a pint costs?"
The weather, the state of public transport and the conduct of politicians might be familiar subjects of saloon-bar gripes, but the price of beer will always be a favourite riff among drinkers who want to conclude their evening with a good moan.
To those of us who can recall - just - the days of the sub-£1 pint, shelling out three times that amount for a single beverage will always cause a small part of ourselves to die a little inside. The steady march of inflation and indirect taxation means this is unlikely to change any time soon.
But a survey by the Good Pub Guide suggests that some of us can count ourselves luckier than others.
The publication asked all 1,165 pubs featured in its 2011 edition how much they charged for their cheapest pint of real ale bitter.
The Great Britain-wide average was £2.80, a 4% rise on 2009. But this covers broad regional disparities, with the cheapest part of the country, the West Midlands, falling well short at £2.45 below the most expensive, Surrey, at £3.08.
According to the Guide's co-editor Fiona Stapley, the wide variation in prices reflects not just the socio-economic make-up of each area but also the levels of competition, the nature of their bars and the type of beer on offer.
"In areas where you have heavy concentrations of the big chains, the prices tend to be higher," she says. "In pubs which brew their own beer, prices are on average a third lower.
"Beer is more expensive in London because they have a large concentration of people who will come out from work and go drinking. But at the same time, food in London pubs is incredibly good value."

70% of pubs want smoking ban lifted, says survey - General news - Smoking - Morning Advertiser
More than 70% of pub operators want the smoking ban to be lifted, according to a new survey by pro-choice organisation freedom2choose.
The survey, which interviewed 570 licensees across England, found that only 8% wanted a full ban but 72% were in favour of a separate smoking room.Statistics from the survey suggest that smoking customers still hold significance in pubs, with approximately 37% of all licensees believing that three quarters or more of their customers were smokers.
A total of 90% of core customers in Northern and Midland pubs are also said to be smokers.
However, the survey represents just over 1% of the UK pub market.
Cultural consultant Dr Ruth Cherrington said: "There is plenty of room for change within this law, which would ensure a fairer 'playing field' for all and a virtual cessation of pub closures."
London Property News: Craft beer pub to open near Euston Station
Overseas property buyers in London are set to receive a warm welcome to the capital with the opening of a unique beer house at Euston Station.
Those considering renting a pub in London might be inspired by the plans to redevelop the Grade-II listed West Lodge, which is situated in the main square of the station, the Publican reports.
Opening next month, the Euston Tap will serve craft beers sourced from around the world.
Jonathan Dalton of Bloomsbury Leisure Group - the company behind the London property development scheme - told the news source: "Network Rail see it as a gateway to the station but were looking at having a Starbucks which would have been horrendous.
"Instead we will transform this beautiful building into a spectacular venue," he said, adding that the two-level Euston Tap will feature American-style beer taps on the back wall rather than in their traditional spot at the bar.
Meanwhile, plans for a high-speed rail link between Euston and Birmingham are under fire after residents of London's Primrose Hill raised concerns that their property prices could fall as a result of the development work.

Number of licensed premises at record high as traditional pubs shut down | Mail Online
An explosion in the number of late-opening supermarkets and bars has left ‘binge Britain’ with the largest number of premises licensed to sell alcohol.
There are now 166,000 venues allowed to sell drink, many open long beyond the traditional 11pm closing time.
It is the equivalent of one licensed outlet for every 280 adults in England and Wales.
Police have blamed late-opening bars, corner shops and supermarkets for the rowdy behaviour and violence blighting the nation’s streets.Drink up: The number of licenced premises, including pubs, clubs and off-licences, has now hit 202,000
At the same time, there are around 30 traditional pubs closing every week.
Critics said Labour’s 24-hour drinking laws – which were supposed to introduce a continental-style ‘cafe culture’ – had sounded the death knell for the pub. Instead, drinkers are consuming cheap supermarket alcohol – often sold at a loss – at home or on street corners.
