Restricted pub closing can cut violence

Closing pubs at 11pm can cut the number of violent attacks by up to ten per cent, according to a study that casts doubt on the Government's decision to relax licencing laws.

Restricting licensing hours saw a reduction in both murders and assaults as well as fatal accidents, research published by the Royal Economic Society shows today.

The study centred on a scheme in Sao Paulo, Brazil, but will raise further questions over Labour's decision to introduce 24-hour drinking in the UK in 2005.
