The company, which has embarked on an ambitious new build plan, said revenue had seen a slight increase of 0.6% to £309.2m and profit before tax and exceptional items had grown incrementally by 0.4% in the period to £27.8m, up from £27.7m for the 26 weeks to 3 April.
Underlying profit was slightly ahead by 0.2% at £65.5m, up from £65.4m.
Sales at the Marston’s Beer Company improved by 8.6% and operating profit at the brewing division grew by 1.4%.
Ralph Findlay, chief executive at Marston’s, said: “We are pleased with the encouraging performance of the business in the first half year.
"The economic environment remains challenging, but there are two key areas that provide the basis for continuing out performance in this market: our new-build programme for large managed pub restaurants; and the introduction of innovative agreements in our tenanted and leased pub estate.”
Findlay added that recent trading had been in line with expectations, with a 1.2% hike in like-for-like sales at its managed houses for the six weeks to 15 May and that trends in Marston’s Pub Company and in Marston’s Beer Company were consistent with the half year.
OXFORDSHIRE faces a fight for the future of its traditional British pubs after it emerged one closes every 28 days, say campaigners.
The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) fears 15 per cent of pubs in the county could call final last orders within 10 years after 13 more pubs closed in the past year.
The Oxford Mail reported pubs had been shutting at a similar rate a year ago and the decline shows no sign of slowing down.
There are now estimated to be 797 pubs in Oxfordshire after the loss of 68 in the past five years.
The warning comes as South Hinksey faces being without a pub for the first time in 170 years after owners Vale Brewery submitted a planning application to convert the General Elliot into a house. The venue was CAMRA’s pub of the year for Oxford in 2007 and 2008.
Meanwhile, more than 70 villagers staged a sit-in at the Gardiner Arms’ beer garden in Tackley on Saturday night to show how much they value their local after it closed 10 days ago.
CAMRA members fear dozens more landlords are on the brink, with increased taxes on alcohol, the smoking ban and cheap supermarket booze leading more people to drink at home.

Development Property For Sale: UK Property Investments
This property investments database offers hundreds of property development opportunities for sale such as pubs, hotels, hostels, care homes, petrol stations, factories, churches, hospitals, post offices and other former public buildings. Paramount Investments also offer UK properties for sale with planning permission and UK properties for sale without planning permission.
UK Pub Sales: Buying a Freehold Pub or Hotel Suitable for Redevelopment
Pubs in the UK have a flexible A4 planning 'use class' that normally can be changed to A1 use, A2 use or A3 use
A1 Use: Shops, retail warehouses, hairdressers, undertakers, travel and ticket agencies, post offices, dry cleaners, pet shops, butchers, sandwich bars, showrooms, domestic hire shops and funeral directors.
A2 Use: Banks, building societies, estate and employment agencies, professional and financial services, betting offices
A3 Use: Restaurants, pubs, snack bars, cafés, wine bars, shops for sale of hot food
Alternatively, buyers can apply for planning permission to convert the pub or hotel into a residential property.
Often UK pubs come with land, beer gardens or car parks that can be developed. Unless it's a village pub, where community issues come into play, planners are sympathetic to alternative uses. Pubs close because they are not successful businesses and redevelopment helps regenerate the area. In run-down areas, planners often want to keep a commercial use for the pub because this boosts local employment.
Before you buy a run down pub or hotel in need of refurbishment or redevelopment, explore different ways of achieving the best return on your property investment
Modernising a pub. A general decorative overhaul can push up the value of a run down pub or hotel without involving planners, architects and a big investment,.
Converting a pub. At its most simple you might buy a large public house or hotel and turn it into flats, but this still involves complex investment budgeting and financing. There's often a large gap between the value of a pub and what it might fetch if redeveloped or converted to offices, shops or flats - but there are also a lot of costs involved, and often a lot of pitfalls. Sometimes it's more profitable to convert the pub into a single house. Planning permission will normally be required in both scenarios. Many Victorian pubs are listed, which can complicate conversion projects.
Change of use as a pub. The conversion of a building from one of business use into housing is a more complex proposition. For example, when converting a pub or hutel into flats, the big, initial risk is trying to buy the property without first applying for planning permission for 'change of use'. You should never buy an investmnet property on the assumption that 'change of use' is possible without serious research into the planning issues and a detailed conversation with local planning officers. Many hotel and pub sales like this are achieved only when they are 'subject to planning', that is, the deal will only be completed, and the full purchase price paid, when planning permission is granted.
The practicalities. With any prospective pub or hotel redevelopment or refurbishment, you'll need to have a good understanding of building regulations and of the architectural possibilities of your property. When converting larger and more substantial pubs, you'll probably need a professional team and you'll need to budget for their services.

Lib Dem MP and Save the Pub Group chair Greg Mulholland had been the candidate favoured by Fair Pint and the Campaign for Real Ale to take the reins from John Healey. Tory MP Nigel Evans was the other name in the frame.
Healey was only appointed in February meaning Britain had a pubs minister for just over three months.
But in that time he did set out a 12-point plan to help pubs, including action to force pubcos to offer tenants a free of tie lease, forcing Brulines equipment to be officially calibrated and offering £3.3m worth of funding for community run pubs (Pubcos face new Beer Orders).
Mulholland tweeted: “Seems clear there will be no Minister for Pubs. Not that John Healey ever really was that, but we do need to know who in DCLG will do the role.”
The Lib Dems had been keen to keep the post.
The Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) has so far not commented on the position.
Rumours that the Conservatives wanted to put the Home Office, the law-and-order department, back in charge of licensing were circulating before the election. These were stoked by the party telling the MA it wanted to "rationalise" the number of departments that deal with pubs in March.
The Department for Culture, Media & Sport was put in control of licensing under Tony Blair's Government, which pushed through the Licensing Act.
The Conservatives have said they want to "overhaul" alcohol licensing and moving the brief to the Home Office could be said to signal a tougher approach.
The well-placed Conservative Party source told the MA: "The licensing brief has been taken over to the Home Office."
The claim has been supported by the fact that the licensing brief has not been allocated to any of the new DCMS ministers flagged up on the department's website.
A Home Office spokeswoman was unable to confirm the claim
The study of thousands of UK businesses found that pubs continued to play it safe in the name stakes with the most popular ones being the Red Lion and the Royal Oak or Crown.
But experts thought customers are more likely to remember — and return to — pubs and companies with unusual names.
“Everyone knows a Red Lion pub or Taj Mahal restaurant, but we want to find the businesses with unusual names that really stand out on the high street and bring a smile to people’s faces,” said ThomsonLocal.com spokesman Mark Cox.
“The UK’s independent businesses have had a hard time in the last two years but, as we slowly come out of recession, it’s the businesses with the most memorable, quirky names that will truly stand out.”
The funniest business names revealed by the study include a fish and chip shop called A Salt and Battered, a hairdressers named Curl Up and Dye and an opticians called Spex in the City.
The most common names were the Flower Shop for florists, Taj Mahal for Indian Restaurants and Mr Chips for chippies.

James Wilmore: Can we trust Cameron and Clegg on pubs?
12 May, 2010
'In the past two years I have interviewed both our new Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, about our beloved trade'
David Cameron and Nick Clegg are both 43, are both privately educated and both have young children.
Similar backgrounds then, but the question for everyone in the trade is: do they care about pubs?
As yesterday's extraordinary events unfolded, it dawned on me that in the past two years I had interviewed both our new Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, about our beloved trade.
Aside from policies, what did I pick up from these encounters? Are they genuine pub people, or just PR-savvy political operators who know the right thing to say at the right time?
Let’s take Cameron first.
When I came face-to-face with him at a pub in his Witney constituency in 2008, the first thing that struck me was he had come to his local pub for a low-key event, on his own.
No PR attack dog, no assistant, just him on his Jack Jones.
This wouldn’t happen now, of course, but he was leader of the opposition at the time. The other thing that struck me was his immaculate turn-out, probably an ingrained thing from his days at Eton – but it definitely put me in my crumpled shirt to shame.
When it came to our interview which lasted 20 minutes, he was confident, intelligent and well briefed. His seven years as a PR man for broadcaster Carlton had clearly held him in good stead in dealing with the media.
On pub matters, he claimed to have been to “most” of them in his constituency, which includes 85 parishes.
He boasted that he loved drinking real ale in pubs – Sharp’s Doom Bar was a particular favourite – and he liked “family friendly” venues.
One quibble, as I read back on the interview now, is this problem of detail, which has been an accusation levelled at him on wider issues. Cameron is clearly keen on promoting the idea of “personal responsibility” which he stressed in the interview.
He said: “What we want is a continental social drinking culture. But you don’t get there just by changing the law, or increasing taxes, you get there by a big cultural change.”
Sounds nice on paper, but how do you argue that when you have the health lobby breathing down your neck to get tough on booze?
My other concern was his ease at flicking his internal switch from passionate concerned pub-goer, to vote-grabbing politician appeared scarily slick.
As the interview drew to close, I mentioned the beer we were drinking – Timothy Taylor’s Landlord – was brewed in Keighley, West Yorkshire. “Ah, Keighley, that’s a key marginal seat, I must remember that,” he fired back.
My interview with Nick Clegg was less memorable – not helped by the fact it was not in a pub.
I asked for it to be in a pub, but Clegg’s people did not seem keen on that.
Again, the Liberal Democrat leader talked the talk very well and appeared very knowledgable about the industry. In fact, his criticism on the pubco model even provoked a defensive response from Enterprise Inns chief Ted Tuppen.
And even during this interview he cleverly referred to his own personal experience of meeting licensees, to show he understood the problems.
But there was little evidence of a strong personality.
Now the chances of Clegg or Cameron walking into a pub to enjoy a quiet pint have evaporated.
And the issues and opportunities facing the trade will be well down their list of priorities. But let’s hope they are not just all talk when it comes to pubs. Watch this space.
