NANTWICH Beer Festival has been axed, leaving CAMRA organisers feeling bitter.
The beer fest, organised by the Campaign for Real Ale, was a popular fixture of the Nantwich Food & Drink Festival.
But it will not feature in this September’s big event as food festival organisers claim it took away trade.
The newly-formed Nantwich Food and Drink Festival Ltd is moving the festival off Mill Island and hosting it around the town.
The main food hall will now taking pride of place in Nantwich Civic Hall - where the beer festival has built up its reputation over the last few years.
An alternative home for the beer fest was not an option as the new organisation, made up of former committee members, town councillors and Nantwich Agricultural Society, felt it adversely affected the town’s pub trade over the festival weekend.
Spokesman Keith Cafferty told Nantwich town councillors at its last meeting that feedback for the layout of the new event on September 24-26 had been extremely positive.
But he added: “There won’t be a beer festival this year. We feel it is taking money away from the town’s licensees.”
The claim has angered CAMRA’s South Cheshire branch secretary Mark Jeffries. He said: “They’re grossly mistaken, and I say that with absolute conviction. Many pubs put up posters to promote the event and we have held a real ale trail in the Nantwich pubs.
“Publicans have always welcomed the beer festival.”
He added: “We’re very disappointed. We’ve been here from the start and the beer festival’s been an integral part of the event.”
CAMRA is now looking at alternative venues to stage what would be the ninth annual Nantwich Beer Festival at a different time of the year.

Pubs have 10 weeks to change to new £20 notes

Licensees have been reminded that the old style £20 notes will cease to be legal tender in just 10 weeks.
Elgar note: withdrawn from 30 June
RSS Back to article list Notes featuring composer Sir Edward Elgar will be withdrawn on 30 June, to be replaced by one with Scottish economist Adam Smith, which was introduced in 2007.
The Adam Smith note features several enhanced security measures to prevent counterfeiting including a wider holographic strip and microlettering.
For several months following the cut-off date most banks, building societies and post offices will accept the old style for customer transactions.
Exchanging notes for non-customers is at the discretion of individual institutions but the Bank of England will always give value for notes issued by the bank.
Since 8 March the number of Elgar banknotes in circulation is estimated to have fallen from 150 million (£3bn) to 125 million (£2.5bn).
There are approximately 1.5 billion £20 notes (£30bn) in circulation.
A CREWE pub which was bulldozed in the 80s opened for business again at the weekend – with a celebration spread across five town pubs.
Ye Olde Chetwode Arms stood opposite St Paul’s Church on the High Town crossroads but was controversially bulldozed in May 1980 to make way for the West Street extension.
Thirty years on, former regular Steve Willett organised a reunion for customers, staff and their friends and family.
Steve said: “It was such a popular pub that people continued talking about it 30 years later and I wanted the younger generation to know what the fuss was all about. I thought the best way forward was to recreate the atmosphere, with music and traditional pub games.”
BBPA calls for pubs that bring tourists to the county to step forward
Pubs in Yorkshire are being urged to enter an awards ceremony for top tourist attractions in the area.
The British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) is sponsoring the Pub of the Year category in the White Rose Awards, which is looking for the pub that best represents the county.
Lee Le Clercq, the BBPA's regional secretary for the North, said: “There’s no shortage of wonderful pubs in Yorkshire. Whether you’re looking for buzzing city centre venues, relaxing cosy locals, architectural gems, scenic wonders, ghostly apparitions or award-winning menus, God's Own County has them all. But if you don't enter, you can't be a winner.”
Last year the title was won by Ashley and Kelly McCarthy of Ye Old Sun Inn at Colton.
The pair recently celebrated even more success when they were named Publicans of the Year at the Publican Awards.

The Liberal Democrats have pledged their support for a minimum price on alcohol – if it can be proved it will tackle “irresponsible drinking”.
In their election manifesto, launched today, the Lib Dems said they back the “principle” of minimum pricing, but it must be “subject to detailed work to establish how it could be used in tackling problems of irresponsible drinking”.
The party appears to have weakened slightly on its position on the measure after previously saying it was in favour of action.
The Lib Dems have also backed a ban on below-cost selling, which appeared in yesterday’s Tory manifesto.
Elsewhere, the Lib Dems have promised to look at the system of setting alcohol duties, if elected.
The manifesto states: “We will review the complex, ill-thought-through system of taxation for alcohol to ensure it tackles binge drinking without unfairly penalising responsible drinkers, pubs and important local industries.”
BBPA produces action kit for members
A trade body is urging licensees to engage with election candidates prior to May 6 as part of a bid to “challenge misconceptions” and talk-up the industry.
The British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) has produced an “action kit” for its members with ideas on how to make the most of a “crucial opportunity” before the election.
It recommends licensees write to local candidates, local newspapers and organise an election hustings in their own pub.
Brigid Simmonds, BBPA chief executive, said: “The half a million of us working in the industry should use it as an opportunity to champion our cause, highlighting the contribution we make, and also to challenge misconceptions about the trade.
“It is an opportunity we must make the most of in run up to polling day.”
The BBPA also hopes to add to the 320 candidates who have already supported its I’m Backing the Pub campaign.
Labour's manifesto: where have all the pubs gone?
Record numbers are closing, leading to a pledge in today's Labour manifesto - so how many are left?
